Senior men tennis players in the greater Pittsburgh area responded in force to the call to compete outdoors on clay during the third annual Senior Men’s Team Doubles Invitational held at the Oxford Athletic Club during September 12-14.  A total of 70 players formed 8 teams which was twice the size of the original event two years ago. The age spread was from late 50’s to early 80’s.

Oxford’s Tennis Coordinator, Sally Gibson, capably arranged all the scheduling logistics and Maintenance Manager Frank Stango ensured that the club’s four har-tru courts were pristinely groomed and ready for play.  Noble Hendrix made the trip north to serve as our tournament director extraordinaire, daily temperatures were in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, and rain delayed play only once during the three days.   Lunch was served daily on the club’s outside terrace overlooking the courts, players enjoyed plenty of animated conversation in between matches and pizza and beer capped the last afternoon of play.

Special thanks goes to team captain and USTA District Chair of Adult Programming, Jim Block, who obtained a generous financial contribution from USTA-Allegheny Mountain District to support this NMTA tournament, the second year of great collaboration!

Captain Jeff Becker led his team to 10 wins and first place, followed by Denny Posteraro’s team with 9 wins.  Ray MacNeil captained two teams who tied for third place at 8 wins each.  Thank you, Noble and NMTA for creating the spark for this event!
